Sermon Text:  Luke 10:17-20, translated by Rev.  Michael G. Lilienthal

17And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!”  18And he said to them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  19Look, I have given you the authority to trample over serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will harm you at all.  20Nevertheless, do not rejoice for this reason, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Sermon Theme: “There Is a Cause to Rejoice: Don’t Be Distracted”

Sunday, 9 October  – The Twenty-first Sunday After Pentecost

Sermon Text:  2 Timothy 2:8-13, translated by Rev. Michael G. Lilienthal

8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, of the seed of David, as in my Gospel, 9in whom I suffer evil even to the point of being bound as a criminal, but the Word of God is not bound: 10on this account I endure all things for the elect, so that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.  11The saying is faithful, for:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we disown him, he will also disown us;
13if we are unfaithful, he remains faithful,

for he is not able to disown himself.

Chief Hymn:  ELH #494, “I Know My Faith Is Founded”

Sermon Theme: “Christians Die with Jesus, and We Live with Jesus”

Sunday, 16 October  – The Twenty-second Sunday After Pentecost

Sermon Text:  Luke 18:1-8a, translated by Rev. Michael G. Lilienthal

18 And he spoke a parable to them to the effect that they must always pray and not be fainthearted, 2saying, “There was a certain judge in a certain city, who neither feared God nor respected man.  3And there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary!’  4And he was not willing to for a long time.  But afterward he said to himself, ‘Although I do not fear God or respect man, 5yet because this widow keeps giving me trouble I will give her justice, so that she will not keep coming until the end and beat my eyes black and blue.’”  6And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says; 7and will not God give justice to his elect, who cry out to him day and night, and be patient toward them?  8I tell you that he will give justice to them quickly.  Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he even find the faith on earth?”

Chief Hymn:  ELH #234, “We Have a Sure Prophetic Word”
